Bio Of Pastor Kristi Van Patten
Rev. Pastor Kristi loves putting a service together and it is evident in her enthusiasm, passion, and love for the ministry. She usually follows the expected pattern of worship but has the unique ability to creatively change things up on occasion, engaging the congregation in her message.
Rev. Kristi Van Patten was born and raised in the Capital District and her early faith formation started at Shenendehowa UMC and Skye Farm Camp. She first felt called to the ministry while in middle school. She studied History at Wells College and earned her M.Div. at Methodist Theological School in Ohio where she was awarded the Hoyt Hickman award for creative worship when she graduated.
Her favorite Hymns include Amazing Grace, It is Well with My Soul, and Just As I Am. She enjoys the new supplements to the hymnal and considers one of her gifts to be finding “new” hymns in the Hymnal. Rev. Pastor Kristi also has three favorite scriptures: John 3:17 – “Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him”, Micah 6:8 – “He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God?” and 1 Peter 1:8 – “Although you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy,”.
Pastor Kristi went to seminary in the fall of ‘98 thinking that she would become a Youth Pastor. The Spirit of God has been at work in her life because she now looks forward to all aspects of ministry: education, visitation, youth, and children’s ministry as well as Word and Sacrament. After many years of service as a Licensed Local Pastor, she is returning to full-time pastoring in July with an eye toward eventual Ordination.
Rev. Pastor Kristi has served in the Adirondack and the Albany Districts of the Upper New York Annual Conference. She is overjoyed to be serving with the fine folks at Alplaus UMC. She is the mother to Kylie - Niskayuna class of ‘23 and Alfred University class of ‘27. She is married to Mike Iwanowicz (11/27/22). The furry herd in their home consists of 3 cats Percy, Buzzy, and Peter, a chihuahua, Dora, and a pit bull, Tonka.
